Leadership and Practice Development for
Human Service Professionals
The Leadership and Practice Development Department (LPD) was created in 1996with responsibility to support and enhance the capacity of state and local human service agencies to improve outcomes by implementing new policies and effect major program reforms. The department supports agencies with a variety of training and management consulting services; all services are based on a high-performance leadership and organizational development framework. LPD works with individual states on a contract basis and with groups of states through seminars, videoconferences, and other distance and group learning venues. LPD staff provide telephone consultation to all states. The department publishes materials on a range of management and program implementation topics. |

Human Services Practice
The Leadership and Practice Development Department works with human service professionals across the country to improve practice through affiliate groups such as the National Staff Development and Training Association, the Association of Administrators of the Interstate Compact on Adoption and Medical Assistance, the National Association of Public Child Welfare Administrators, the Association of Administrators of the Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children, as well as our Information Systems affiliate and grant giving organizations such as Casey Family to Family.
A Unique Leadership Development Program
LPD training and management consulting focuses on those organizational structures, strategies, and systems that most directly affect the performance of organizations; that is, those areas that serve as "leverage" points in an organization; e.g., strategic planning, resource management, performance management, customer services, and leadership.
The Leadership for High Performance curriculum is a specialized and proprietary curriculum, which is only available to state and local human services agencies through APHSA's training and management consulting services. APHSA's leadership development curriculum and programs were conceived by and for chief executive officers and human service professionals who understood that few public or private sector careers require the specialized blend of leadership skills and knowledge that it takes to effectively serve in the human services arena.
Steering committees of state human services chief executives, academics and adult learning specialists, and human services practitioners assisted in the development of the curriculum. Under the guidance of these highly experienced committees, APHSA designed its leadership development programs to build leadership capacity among human service agencies and provide APHSA members with the personal and business knowledge, competencies, and perspectives to successfully negotiate the distance from technician, clinician, and manager, to leader.
APHSA offers a specialized blend of program and policy education and management and leadership training. Unlike other private and public sector leadership programs, APHSA draws on a wide variety of faculty and practitioner expertise that can be used to meet the unique requirements of each customized session and the special interests of human service executives and professionals.
